What is the UPSC CAPF Examination?

​The UPSC CAPF exam is conducted to recruit aspiring candidates for the position of Assistant Commandant in Central Armed Police Forces. They are appointed as Assistant Commandants and are Gazetted Officers generally referred to as DAGOs (Directly Appointed Gazetted Officers).The exam is conducted on a yearly basis by the UPSC to recruit candidates in several forces such as CRPF( Central Reserve Police Force), BSF( Border Security Force), CISF(Central Industrial Security Force), ITBP(Indo Tibetan Border Police)and SSB(Sashastra Seema Bal).

Assistant Commandant Job Profile

  • Assistant commandants are mandated to command companies and direct action teams (DATs) in various CAPFs and law enforcement agencies.The Role comprises of handling law and order situations, conducting fair and free elections, combing naxal infested areas,maintaining peace in terrorism and insurgency affected areas and administration of day to day working of the battalions comprising strength of 150 - 200 men under command. Thus role and performance assumes an enormous significance because of the special features of an emergency force which is pressed in aid to civil power to perform multiple roles in extremely difficult and high pressure situations. 

  • It's a job with lots of responsibilities which is a combination of both police and military responsibilities.One is a Leader leading from Front and motivating the troops at every stage.

  • They are also sent on deputations to serve in various important organisations such as RAW, NSG, SPG, NIA, IB, CBI, NDRF, NCB, state armed police force and Indian Army. 

Age Limits

A candidate must have attained the age of 20 years and must not have attained the age of 25 years on 1st August, 2024, i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August, 1999 and not later than 1st August, 2004.

​

Some relaxation was given to candidates belonging to scheduled caste or scheduled tribes, other backward classes and ex-servicemen.

The recruitment process is divided into four stages

  1.   ​Stage I: Written Exam

The written exam consists of 2 papers, the details of which are shared below
                     Paper 1: Objective Exam—General Ability & Intelligence of  250 Marks

Paper 2: Descriptive Paper—General Studies, Essay & Comprehension of 200 marks.

CAPF exam paper 1  is in Hindi and English language. Paper 2 is in English although Essays in paper 2 can be given in Hindi.
Paper 2 is of only a qualifying nature but will only be evaluated after the clearance of Paper 1 cut-off.

   2.  Stage II: Physical Efficiency Test
​ The Physical Efficiency Test (PET), taken as part of the CAPF exam, is one of the most important stages in the selection procedure. CAPF PET consists of the following tests
                    100 Metres Race

800 Metres Race

Long Jump

Shot Put (7.26 Kgs)

After qualifying the PET, the selected candidates are shortlisted for medical review. The candidates who qualify the medical standards are then selected for a Personal Interview.
 

   3.  Stage III: Interview/ Personality Test

The next critical stage of the selection criteria is interview, in  which the candidate's attitude, skills, and abilities are assessed through different tools. A panel of 4-5 senior interviewing officers takes a brief interview of around 30-40 minutes. There are questions based on the answers filled in DAF (Detailed Application Form)

 4.  Stage IV: Final Selection/ Merit List
Candidates who perform well in the interview are then finally selected for the CAPF AC post in the armed forces of their choice or preference.

Notification of CAPF is released in May every year and conducted on the first Sunday of August Of the same year.

  • The candidate must graduate in any discipline from a recognized university
